Acquired Brain Injury

Recovering from an acquired brain injury is a long process that involves several professionals and a great deal of work by you. For several decades we have known that the visual system is affected by a brain injury. We have also known that recovery is possible following an injury through the use of therapy (such as vision therapy). Only recently, however, has science been able to show how and why this recovery is possible. The concept of neuroplasticity enables anyone of any age to actually change the way they use their brain. Neuroplasticity allows someone to regain abilities that were once thought to be forever lost following a brain injury.

Some of the areas of vision that are affected by an acquired brain injury and have shown to improve following the event are:

  • Visual field loss
  • Reading difficulties
  • Diplopia (double vision)
  • Cranial nerve palsies
  • Accommodative dysfunction (eye focusing)
  • Convergence palsy (inability to comfortably use eyes at near)
  • Eye movement disorders
  • Visual perceptual deficits & agnosia

vt_synapseDr. Haleo and the Vision Therapy Center of Charlotte are the experts to diagnose and treat the visual conditions that occur as a result of an acquired brain injury. They concentrate clinical care to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and management of children and adults who struggle with executive function arising from binocular and visual-spatial problems associated with ocular motor dysfunction, binocular convergence issues, strabismus, amblyopia and neurological insults.

We treat all functionally related binocular vision, ocular-motor problems and visual perceptual issues and the visual side effects caused from strokes, car accidents and head injuries including double vision, slanted vision, balance problems and more, while working in concert with your referring physician or therapists.

Our treatment programs are always one-on-one to ensure dedicated, individualized and focused care and attention. Many programs are covered by insurance, workman’s compensation and disability benefits.

“Neuro-Optometry can help the rehabilitation team to more effectively restore function of daily living activities and can help direct the rehabilitative efforts to make more lasting gains with mobility, posture, balance, orientation in space and object localization. Likewise, it can help the gains made to visual attention, concentration, cognition and comprehension. All of these gains lead to an improved quality of life.”

Testimonial

“My son started vision therapy with Dr. Haleo at the beginning of his first grade year. He was struggling with reading and writing, and would become irate when he needed to write something, even something as simple as his name. After a few months of seeing Dr. Haleo, not only did he get better at writing, but he even asked for a paint set!”
